The first Rallycross event of 2009 is already history with the completion, last Saturday January 3, of the first round of the Lydden Hill Motorsport Club 2009 Winter Rallycross Series. The event got underway on Lydden Hill Race Circuit (with joker lap!) at Wootton also host for the opening event of the 2009 FIA European Rallycross Championship on Easter Monday. The race was won in the Supercar category by Liam Doran, at the wheel of a Ford Fiesta ST, ahead of Belgian Koen Pauwels (Ford Focus ST) and Englishman Steve Hill (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9).

Johan Larsson, the 22 year old son of former Rallycross driver Ronny Larsson, announced earlier this week his participation in the 2009 FIA European Rallycross Championship in Divison 1A.
In close collaboration with Kenneth Hansen Motorsport, Larsson will take part in the complete European championship at the wheel of a Citroën Saxo that was previously used by ODAS Racing in the French Rally Championship ("Rallye Asphalte"). Larsson who already had the possibility to test drive the Saxo during the last round of the 2008 FIA European Rallycross Championship at Buxtehude, Germany qualified straight for the Division 1A 'A' final with the car. Eventually he finished just outside the podium on fourth place.
Beside the 10 rounds counting 2009 FIA European Rallycross Championship, he will also participate in the 2009 Swedish Rallycross Championship and probably in some selected "pre-season" test events.

Volland's new Škoda Fabia RS S1600 was presented on Škoda's booth at Motor Show Essen.

People who do some in-depth checks from time to time on our events pages noticed that in 2001, 2002 and 2003 a national Rallycross Championship was held in Iceland. From 2004 on it wasn't anymore possible to organize a decent championship due to several legal issues. However, over the past years the people continued working on re-installing an Icelandic Rallycross Championship. And with success it seems, as we received a message from the organizer a few days ago with a lot of good news. The RCA-club is allowed to organize events again on the, now multifunctional, Kapelluhraun-track near Hafnafjörður. Even more, on October 25 a first Rallycross event since 2003 was held.

The first Rallycross event in Iceland since 2003 was held on October 25. (Photo: RCA)
From 2009 on the Icelandic Rallycross Championship will be included in our events pages again. Rallycross events are scheduled throughout 2009 on April 25, May 16, June 20, July 18, August 15, September 5 and September 12-13. Racing will occur in a Junior class, a 1600 class and a so-called 'open' class.
